Cawdor Castle and Garden on a sunny day with blue skies and white and grey clouds

Nairnshire, Scotland

Cawdor Castle was built in the 1400s by Clan Calder but passed to Clan Campbell, Earls of Cawdor in the 1500s.

Cawdor Castle is known for the link to William Shakespeare’s fiction story “The Tragedy of Macbeth”, where one of the main characters is made “Thane of Cawdor”. In reality, Cawdor Castle is not built until 400 years after Shakespeare wrote the story.
